Conserving and restoring the biological diversity in the desert margins
The Desert Margins Program is a collaborative initiative among nine countries ( Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya ), five centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research ( ICRISAT, ICRAF, IFDC, ILRI, TSBF-CIAT), and three Advanced Research Institutes ( CEH , IRD, CIRAD) (see details about partners). This initiative is to try to implement the Convention to Combat Desertification. Furthermore, the problem of biodiversity loss is particularly critical in these very dry areas (100 to 600 mm annual rainfall) where ecosystems are less likely to recover once they are seriously damaged.

The overall objective of the DMP is therefore to arrest land degradation in Africa’s desert margins through demonstration and capacity building activities and also to combat reduced sequestration of carbon, and increased soil erosion and sedimentation. The specific objective is to preserve and to restore the ecosystems by improving the practices of management of the natural resources. To do so, public and private organisations and NGO are involved in specific topics such as forestry studies, ecological monitoring, …
